Writing, editing, proofreading and content development for businesses, professionals, consumers, and students
Whether you’re struggling with freshman comp, need a grammar refresher, or could use some assistance starting or finishing a term paper, I can assist. I will offer one-on-one tutoring help with your writing or English assignment via email, phone, and/or Skype. If you happen to be local to the Conejo Valley area of California — Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Oak Park, or Agoura Hills — we can meet in person.
Writing — and helping others improve their writing — are my personal and professional passions.
I’ve held positions as adjunct professor, instructor, and lecturer for universities, community colleges, and adult extension programs. I’ve taught English, freshman composition and journalism to high school, community college, university, and adult students.
I have a bachelor’s degree in English (cum laude) with a Journalism minor and a master’s degree in English literature (with distinction) from California State University, Northridge, and I completed post-graduate study in rhetoric at the University of Southern California. For more than 20 years, I’ve worked as a writer/editor for national and regional magazines, newspapers and websites.
So I have the academic chops — along with professional, practical experience as a working writer, editor, and communicator. To learn more about my experience, please click here.
Rates: My tutoring rate is $55/hour ($75/90 minutes) for the first session. After the first session, if you pay in advance for three or more additional sessions, the price drops to $45/hour ($60/90 minutes).
“I had the good fortune of having Maryann Hammers as my mentor for nearly five years at San Gabriel Valley Medical Center, where she served as director of public relations. She’s exceptionally talented as a writer, perfectionist as an editor, and an accurate and speedy reporter.” — Denise Henry, public relations representative, The University of Akron, Ohio.
“Maryann Hammers is dedicated, professional, accurate and has a fine sense of humor — all essential qualities for a top-rate editor. Whatever she touches turns out more finely tuned and yet retains the writer’s voice.” — Victoria Clayton, writer.
